Bethany Fishbein, OD

OA 5492, TPA 0865

I grew up in Cranford NJ, and graduated from Cranford High School in 1989. I went to Binghamton University (it was SUNY-Binghamton then), and graduated with a B.S. in Psychobiology in 1993. I completed my Doctor of Optometry degree in 1997 at the New England College of Optometry (where I met Dr. Jonathan) in Boston, MA.

My favorite thing about being an eye doctor is that it gives me the opportunity to teach. I love teaching people about their eyes, and I hope every patient learns something during their eye exam!

Our kids keep me very busy-- Sam is in fifth grade, and is a fun-loving kid, and an amazing ice skater and hockey player (you see his Daddy's Canadian influence there!), and even plays the cello!  Tali is almost 7 years old, and has such a loving caring personality.  She is our own "tiny dancer" and loves her dance classes and recitals.  She has recently decided that she wants to be a nurse when she grows up (which is good, because I was concerned about the career opportunities when she wanted to be a princess!)  It is hard to balance kids and family and work-- but I am so lucky that I get to do something I really love. As if I'm not busy enough, I am also a triathlete-- I have done two sprint and three Olympic distance triathlons, and even ran a full marathon last June.

Jonathan Fishbein, OD

OA 5536, TPA 0942

I grew up in Toronto, Canada, and graduated from York Mills High School in 1986.  I spent a year at Hebrew University of Jerusalem before graduating with a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Toronto in 1991.  Despite an unhealthy obsession with the video game "Cruising USA" I received my Doctor of Optometry degree in 1997, and completed a residency in Vision Rehabilitation at the Feinbloom Center in Philadelphia in 1998.

I like the challenge of optometry because every patient is different.  I may be prescribing a child's first pair of glasses during one exam, and treating an older patient for glaucoma during the next exam.  My job is constantly changing, and that keeps it fun.

In my free time, I run (I've completed 2 marathons as fundraisers for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society/Team in Training), and play in two different hockey leagues-- we even have a Somerset Eye Care Red Eyes team!   I like to watch hockey (rooting for the Toronto Maple Leafs of course) and am a huge fan of The Who.  I make up for my clean lifestyle by watching TV shows like Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad.

Joy Harewood, OD

OA 6382, OM 1054

I grew up in Ottawa, the snowy capital city of Canada.  I graduated from Merivale High school, then moved to Toronto where I graduated with my B.Sc in Genes Genetics and Biotechnology from the University of Toronto.  My love for travel and adventure took me to California, where I completed my optometric education at UC Berkeley, then to New York City, where I completed a residency in Ocular Disease at SUNY College of Optometry.

I find optometry exciting because it is so versatile and it gives me the chance to interact with a variety of people.  There are so many different modes of practice and each person you meet is different culturally, medically and personally.  Every time you walk into an exam room there is an opportunity to teach and prescribe, as well as to learn!  The constant learning makes optometry a dynamic and vibrant profession that I feel privileged to be part of.

I am a bit of a health nut and could not live without Bikram yoga, aerobics, and delicious vegan food.  I absolutely love to travel and am always up for suggestions of interesting “off the beaten path” places to visit.  I am excited be part of the energetic team of doctors and staff that make Somerset Eye Care a wonderful place.
